Relocate Mobil headquarters from Lagos to Akwa, N’Delta group demands

A Niger Delta group, the Niger Delta Peoples Alliance (NDPA) on Tuesday called on Mobil Producing Nigeria, to relocate its headquarters from Lagos to Akwa Ibom State.

In a communique signed by the group’s Publicity Director, Unyime Isemin, the group said it was unfair that communities in Akwa Ibom suffer environmental challenges due to Mobil’s exploration of crude oil, but are unable to enjoy its benefits.

The group claimed that five cases of oil spillage, involving more than 30,000 barrels of crude oil, within the local communities have been reported in 2016 alone.

It also urged the present administration to revoke the the privatization of the Aluminium Smelting Company of Nigeria (ALSCON) and the Nigeria Newsprint Manufacturing Company (NNMC).

“These companies were said to have been privatized for about 10 years now, yet none of them has started production, depriving our teeming youth the needed employment opportunity, (and) also depriving the state of the payee and withholding taxes,” the group said.
