‘Rivers is peaceful’

Ahead of the 2016 edition Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) expected to be hosted in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state Commissioner of Culture and Tourism, Tonye Briggs Oniyide, has described the state as peaceful.

According to a statement signed by the Media Assistant to the Commissioner, Asawari Sydney Jack, the commissioner made this known on Sunday while inspecting venues for the AMAA event in Port Harcourt.

Oniyide further explained that Rivers people are known for their happy and welcoming disposition, saying “during this period that we are hosting the world at AMAA, we will also demonstrate how well we co-exist.”

Speaking on social media posts that alleged that the state violent, the commissioner said “these are posts concocted to achieve mischief.”

“As Port Harcourt was peaceful. You can guess what their aim is but the people of Rivers State live in peace.”

She also said that those spreading falsehood about violence in the state are ill informed or doing so for selfish reasons.

“We live happily here and we are sure that our visitors will meet us and see us in our usual hospitable best.”
