A Police Inspector was shot dead in the Idimu area of Lagos while he was withdrawing money from an Automated Teller Machine by a four-man robbery gang.
Two of the gang members however, met their waterloo as they were gunned down by operatives of the Rapid Response Squad.
According to Vanguard, the robbers came in two motorbikes stationed at strategic locations at about 11a.m.
They forcefully robbed a bank customer of a huge amount of money, killing him in the process.
During their escape, they reportedly saw the Inspector, who was withdrawing money from an ATM at Okunola Street and shot him in the head.
Some RRS operatives who were on routine patrol chased the robbers. They shot the motorcycle rider and his accomplice.
The second rider lost balance as he almost ran into his fallen partner’s motorcycle. In the process, his passenger fell, while he escaped.
According to eyewitnesses two members of the gang died on the spot, one was arrested while another is still at large.
An eyewitness, Ojo Santos, said: “Some people tried to save the Policeman by rushing him to the hospital, but he died before they could get a vehicle. This is not the first time these bad boys have attacked customers.
“It is obvious there could be an insider, who gives them information on customers that withdraw huge amount. We were told that the man in question withdrew over three hundred thousand naira and from the way they struck it was clear that they came specifically for the man.
“Their motorcycles were recovered by the police. Also, two guns were found on two of the dead robbers.”
After preliminary investigation by the police, it gathered that the arrested suspects had killed a policeman in a previous operation.
Confirming the incident, the command’s spokesperson, SP Dolapo Badmus, said the case had been transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, for further investigation.
