Swansea University has been voted the Overall Best University in the UK in the main award category of the prestigious WhatUni.com Student Choice Awards (WUSCA’s) 2014.

The WUSCA’s are voted exclusively by students at UK universities. The awards showcases and celebrates the excellence of UK Higher Education in 9 categories; Course and Lecturers, Accommodation, City Life, Facilities, Clubs and Societies, Students’ Union, International, Job Prospects and University of the Year.

The results from a survey of over 26,000 students was announced on Thursday May 15, 2014 at a spectacular gala dinner at the Waldorf Hilton, London and was hosted by award winning comedy presenter Clive Anderson.

Also nominated in three other categories, Swansea University was voted second in the UK in both the Courses and Lecturers and Student Union categories, and third in the Clubs and Societies category.

A high powered delegation from Swansea university was recently in Nigeria to attend the UKEAS, KOT and ESCC Education fairs at Port Harcourt, Calabar and Lagos. The delegation was led by Dr. Ubaka Iwobi of the College of Law.

An elated Professor Alan Speight, Swansea University Pro-Vice-Chancellor, said: “We are absolutely delighted that UK students have voted Swansea University to be the Best University in the UK because students are at the centre of everything we do. Swansea University is committed to providing an excellent student experience and to have been recognised by so students in these major categories is a major reflection of our devotion to the excellence of the learning experience and supportive environment which we provide to our students. We have achieved this excellent accolade of Best University by listening to and working in partnership with our students, and we are delighted that Swansea University has been rated so highly in these awards.”

There was more heartening news earlier in the week when the newly published Complete University Guide 2015 showed that Swansea University Swansea moved up the overall rankings from 48th to 42nd  out of the 127 UK universities listed  leaving it in the top 20 in the UK for a wide range of subjects, from engineering and medical technology to social work thus putting it among the UK’s leading Universities.

The Complete University Guide is an independent guide, which analyses universities across the UK, looking at areas such as graduate prospects, student satisfaction and spend per student.

Swansea University also ranked in the top ten UK universities for social life, in joint fourth place.

The annual Times Higher Education survey looks at areas such as high quality staff/lectures, well-structured courses, and good industry connections, as well as good support/welfare, good environment on campus/around university, and good social life.

Commenting on the shower of good news, Professor Richard B Davies, Swansea University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “What a week!  As staff and students, we of course know Swansea is a world-class university offering an outstanding student experience, in an unrivalled location. However, it is always heartening to receive independent national accolades, which confirm we are continuing our upward trajectory. The number of students applying to study at Swansea has greatly increased in the last two years and these survey results this week are an indication of why Swansea’s popularity continues to rise with Welsh, UK and International students. “We are confident of achieving our ambition to be a research-intensive, top-30 UK University by 2017, ahead of our centenary in 2020.”
