The title of Odunsi the Engine’s next album is inspired by anime

Odunsi

After releasing the Everything You Heard Is True EP back in May, Odunsi the Engine has teased on Twitter the title of his next project which takes the name of the Netflix hit anime series Kakegurui. While some fans have found joy in the news, the title has left others confused, with no follow-up explainer or context from Odunsi. Not that we expected any from him anyway.

Kakegurui, which means compulsive gambler, is about rich students in a private academy habouring an underground economy in gambling that determines hierarchy within the school. Yumeko, a new student, arrives one day and disrupts everything. The show was released on Netflix in 2018 with two seasons to boot.

The first season had wicked wits and a scary, pulpy charm. If you haven’t heard of Kakegurui before now, perhaps this is a time to give it a try. Odunsi giving his fourth project an anime title, even if likely tentative, isn’t too surprising. The 24-year-old singer has always incorporated fragments from pop culture into his artistic expression, elements that feels vaguely rooted in cartoons, from his fashion style to his Instagram photos.

Even his Twitter profile photo is that of Young Justice’s Kaldur’ahm/Aquaman. How will Kakegurui as a title tie the intended themes in Odunsi’s album? Or we are being too literal? We will find out soon enough.
