When a mother recommends that a judge give her son the death penalty, you know that you’ve got a serious problem. Jennifer Cloninger endured an absolute nightmare when her son, Matthew Safrit, shot his stepfather to death and then turned the knife on her.  The entire argument took place because the parents would not allow their son to borrow the family car.

The 21-year old college student ran into the woods to get away after the incident, but was arrested shortly thereafter.  Police dogs found the man and he was taken into custody.

“He deserves the death penalty for what he has done,” his mother told WSOC.

The mother says that her son had borrowed his grandmother’s car to visit his girlfriend, Natalie Champion.  When she and her husband arrived to retrieve the car, the son came out angry.  He’d been drinking, which likely contributed to his behavior.  This led to a shouting match, where the boy threw the keys into his mother’s face.

“Nathan came to the door and banged on the door and said: ‘Matt your stuff is going out of the house tonight,’”she said.

Right after that interaction, her son came out with the gun and shot her husband several times.

She says that although she loves her son, she can never forgive him for what he did to her and her husband.

“You can’t take a life and apologize and think that everything is going to be okay, because it’s not,” she said. “ He is my son and I love him, but it’s going to be hard forgiving him.”
