TICKER: Partners in crime: Married couple kills police officer in crime spree

A husband and wife duo is wanted by the police for shooting a police deputy and for carjacking. They allegedly shot the sheriff’s deputy of L.A. County early on Sunday morning. The attack took place on Durfee Avenue in South El Monte outside of a convenience store.

According to the authorities the Temple Station deputy ran the license plate numbers of a white Ford Explorer. The Explorer, which had been involved in a robbery earlier that week, appeared in the system leading the deputy to call for police backup. He then confronted the couple in the store, leading to a gun battle between the couple and the officer. According to Captain Mike Parker the male suspect (believed to be 24-year-old Darnell Washington) emerged from the driver’s side of the car, toting a shotgun. It was in the following altercations that a deputy was shot

Parker said, “The suspects then began to run. A short distance away, a second deputy involved shooting occurred. That second deputy-involved shooting is where the deputy got hit.” The bullet wounds were not life threatening as the injured deputy was treated and released after being airlifted to the hospital.

Darnell and his 25-year-old wife Tania fled the scene and jacked another vehicle to make their escape. They ditched that car for a light blue 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager. The license plate number on their new vehicle is 3PHK484. The couple has been sought after since Tania helped her husband escape from Glen Helen Rehabilitation Center in Devore after he was being detained on suspicion of robbery. The couple is both armed and dangerous.
