TICKER: Two charged for stealing $50,000 from Obama’s campaign

Two men from suburban Chicago have been charged in the theft of $50,000 in checks taken from President Obama’s national campaign headquarters.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Jessie Adams, 36, of Joliet, has been charged with organizing a financial criminal enterprise, while WIllard Elam, 48, of Dolton, was charged with continuing a financial criminal enterprise.

Fox Chicago reports that the checks were made out to vendors who supplied services to the campaign. Elam allegedly used his own information to set up fake accounts with the legitimate vendors’ names.

Elam was charged in the crime Friday, while Adams was charged Saturday, according to the Associated Press. A third man allegedly involved in the theft remains at the large, according to police.

The theft took place Wednesday at the president’s Chicago campaign headquarters located at 130 E. Randolph St. in the Loop. The Obama campaign did not initially disclose the amount of money the checks were for.

Both Adams and Elam are slated to appear in bond court Saturday.
