Olaide ‘Exschoolnerd’ Olabode is one of young Nigeria’s most popular Twitter figures. She tweets it all – from the hilarious to the tweets filled with caustic irreverence. Currently an Intern/Social Media Expert with MTV Networks, she daily employs her razor sharp marketing abilities to drive the brand of her employers.
During a quick interview with the self-confessed wife of hip hop star, Drake, Miss Exschoolnerd was quite willing to bare it all!
How did you get on Twitter?
I can’t remember exactly. I know I joined sometime in 2008 and didn’t get the hang of it at first. So I left for about a year but all my friends kept telling me how interesting it was. I decided to give it another go and as they say… the rest is ‘twistory’! Hehe!
Who would you say is your favourite tweep?
I don’t have one particular tweep who’s my favourite. A whole bunch of people crack me up…so there’s no one person.
Is there any particular tweet you’ll never forget? Tell us about it.
There are many.. *checks favourites* but I’ll just post two:
@DJDRAMA: Twitter gave everybody their own reality show. Some real… Some scripted…”
@iam_dQ: Everyday I beat my own previous record for number of consecutive days I’ve stayed alive. #Thankful!
Have you had any embarrassing/memorable experience on Twitter? If yes, what happened?
Embarassing? Yeah! There was one gbagaun I gbagauned that me sef I felt sad for myself. I got so many yellow bars that day, ehn… Gosh! It felt really horrible.
What are the downsides of being on Twitter?
Because it’s the internet, people use the opportunity to be disrespectful under the guise ‘its just Twitter’. I can be disrespectful and annoying but I don’t do that, because even if it’s the virtual world, you still have to learn how to talk to people and relate with them. So yes, that’s one of the downsides of Twitter. And people just think they know you.. Hell! I don’t even know myself!
What are the upsides?
Laughter! I love laughing and Twitter for me, is like a distraction from my problems. It’s like therapy. Where I can go and laugh, share info… just generally have a good time.
Do you follow back readily? Why?
I am careful who I follow, in the past you just follow anybody but then, they just turn out to be really disrespectful, rude and you just have to be wary of who you follow. If you give me a reason to follow you, I will, not like you have to tweet a reason at me. If I read your tweets and you are funny/smart or have useful info for me I’ll follow. It’s not Facebook. You followed me for a reason let me have a reason to follow you too. I don’t wanna follow someone whose every tweet is insulting an artiste he can’t say two words to in real life. I don’t need such negativity in my life. So if you follow me and you tweet at me a couple of times and I gauge the kind of person you are, and you’re someone whose tweets I want to be seeing, I’ll definitely follow. Life is too short for iranu.
What would possibly make you close your Twitter account?
Nothing. Only if I choose to for reasons best known to me. Not any other person’s actions or whatever.
