Ugandan President, Yoweri Museveni poised to win 5th term in office

Despite ruling the country for more than 30 years, Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni, is set to extend his three decade rule after taking a lead in the presidential election.

With about 83 percent of the votes already counted, Museveni is leading with a solid 61 percent while his closest rival, Kizza Besigye, trails behind with just 34 percent of the votes, according to the Ugandan Election Commission.

The complete result of the election is expected to be announced in a few hours.

The election has been marred by violence and accusations of electoral fraud, with the opposition and Museveni’s supporters being arrested four times since the day of the election and are currently under house detention.

Meanwhile, social media platforms have been shut down in the country.

YNaija have previously announced that Nigerian’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo is the Chairman of the Commonwealth mission sent to observe the Ugandan election. Obasanjo, who oversaw elections in Nigeria that many say was fraudulent, is yet to make an official report on the Uganda election.

The Ugandan presidential election has so far elicited international condemnations from the USA and the EU, with the US secretary of state, John Kerry, calling Museveni to voice his complaint.

Museveni, a 71 year old former rebel had seized power in 1986, will be serving his fifth term as President if he win this election.
