Nollywood filmmakers Victor Ugoo Njoku and Neec Nonso have chosen to tell a hushed story by shining light on three queer couples living in Nigeria.
The documentary titled “This is Love” is directed by Victor Ugoo Njoku and Neec Nonso and will go into the secret lives of Nigerian same-sex couples despite the country criminalising homosexuality.
“This is Love tells the romance stories of 3 Nigerian LGBTQ+ couples and how they navigate romantic relationships in a conservative and hostile Nigerian environment,” the logline of the documentary explains.
The documentary will focus on the lives of a lesbian couple, a gay couple and a transman in a relationship with a ciswoman. Each couple narrates their story, including how they met, fell in love, and managed their relationship in Nigeria.
The documentary, “This is Love,” produced by VUN Productions and Aguocha, was filmed in Lagos and includes dialogue in English, Pidgin, and Yoruba. Its purpose is to shed light on the usually overlooked experiences of LGBTQ+ Nigerians and to add to the ongoing conversations about human rights and equality.
