Watch your nails ladies, NYSC to train female youth corp members in self defence

Tolu Orekoya
With the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) now sending youth corp members further afield than ever before, and with the resent spate of young female corp members fending off attacks on their person by the rulers of traditional kingdoms, they have decided to offer a self-defence course as part to help the young women protect themselves. It is a prudent move for the organisation, who has, in recent years, come under fire for posting young adults to dangerous regions in the country.
From Nigerian Eye:
[The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Nnamdi Okore-Afia] said, “We had issues of female corps members being molested by okada riders commercial motorcycle operators and traditional rulers. The reason is that if these young ladies had some form of training in self-defence, they will be able to say no in more ways than one.
“We will give these young ladies girls a fighting chance so that if they are faced with such a situation, before the deed is done, these young corps members will probably no longer be helpless victims.”
Still, NYSC understands that even undertaking to train corp members in martial arts and self-defence may not be enough to keep them alive. During the same interview the director also said:
“We have a life assurance policy for corps members. It is NIm per corps member. It is managed by capital Express Insurance. We also have health insurance for corps members. We have gone beyond looking for donation for corps members.”
He did not back way from posting students to trouble-prone areas, however, stating that the NYSC had to send corp members to every state in the country.
