Xmas Ghost-busters: How Abia State uncovered 1,727 ghost workers

About 1727 ghost workers have been discovered by the Abia state government. The Ghost workers have been on the payroll of its 17 local governments.

A biometric data implementation committee that was set up by the state government to find out why the council’s wage bill had steadily been on the increase recently fished out the ghost workers.

The Chairman of the committee, Cosmos Ndukwe speaking to newsmen said a breakdown of the figure showed that Aba South council has the highest number of ghost workers with 245, followed by Isiala Ngwa South with 153 ghost workers, while Ugwunagbo with 28 ghost workers had the least number.

He said the committee visited 17 councils to count the numbers of genuine workers stating that they were able to identify about 1727 of them who couldn’t be accounted for.

Governor Thedore Orji said his administration is determined to stop the rot exisiting in the local government system.
