YNaija is born again

…like the pastor called us to the front of the church and we gave our lives to Christ. “Born again” like that.

At this point, I should probably introduce myself as the new editor of YNaija, the main driver of this “born again” movement.

“Change Process”

It’s a phrase bandied about in the RED offices by our wonderful overlord, Chude. Among staffers, it has evolved into our little inside joke. “Joy”, too.

Jokes aside, I’d like to welcome you to the YNaija chapter of this “Change Process” – the product of an incredible number of strategy meetings.

Unless you’re blind, you’ve noticed something isn’t the same about the site. The site looks drastically different, it’s no longer the ugly thing you remember. There’s this honesty and transparency too. You know, the self awareness I’m displaying right now.  The company has spent the last couple of months mulling over what exactly YNaija is. We’ve gone from hosting Twitter Award Shows to our current unending barrage of political stories. At some point, we thought we were the Nigerian Gawker. Don’t laugh.

What is YNaija?

The current climate of the #NigerianInternet is pretty messy. Copy+Paste is the order of the day and we, too, have been accused of this.

Not anymore though.

YNaija will be your trusty guide through the shambles that is the #NigerianInternet.

In its full glory, YNaija is or should be:

  1. Prompt – We want our wonderful readers to see us the first and only stop in their quest for news. As a result, we deliver the news as it happens
  2. Unique – Because the “other guys” are Copy+Paste,  it is our responsibility to provide our readers with a different, elegant, and unique angle to a story.
  3. Simple
  4. Brief – We get to the point. Saying what needs to be said and nothing more
  5. Insightful – We endeavor to provide our readers with full context.
  6. Witty – No one wants to read boring journalist-speak. We are fun, engaging, and direct.
  7. Honest -This is the most important note here. Even if we fail in our attempt to be any of the above things, we will be honest. That much, we can promise. We will not lie about emotions or reactions, and we will say everything we mean. Starting from this very post.

YNaija is NOT a politics site

Shocker, I know.

No more politics?

For now, no, but it will change in the near future. Our politics coverage has outgrown YNaija and it needs a home of it’s own. Your parents don’t want to keep you home when you hit 30 and in that vein, Politics is a big boy now. Politics won’t be moving out just yet, but expect these changes in the coming weeks. In addition to this, we’re relaunching several editorial brands as well.

What are these editorial brands?

YNaija – Nigerian pop culture and current affairs.

Y! Football – Nigeria’s first football forum.

The September Standard – Fashion news and industry gossip.

Tech Africa – Tech news and analysis.

Lobatan Africa – Our platform to showcase music from upcoming Nigerian acts

So what do we do now?

Enjoy it.

Oh, and tell your friends to unblock us. We’re sorry for all the bad times.
