The Media Blog: We hope you know Tajudeen Adepetu is the biggest media owner in West Africa today

We mean biggest literally. No metaphors needed.

We are coming to this in greater detail soon, as we have been working on an article about what makes him so significant for a while (but apparently we think we will win a Pulitzer with it, because it has taken too long!). But we find out any people don’t know this and so let’s just drop it in case you need it for a business deck, ya know?

Tajudeen Adepetun, 52, owns two companies – Consolidated Media Associates and Alphavision Productions.

At a time, he was the country’s largest independent producer of scripted programming – including (or especially) TV drama: Saints and Sinners, Candellight, Treasures, Everyday People etc. And he was the first mover for telenovelas in Nigeria (responsible ultimately for all the Mexican soaps you see everywhere).

Then he launched Soundcity – and we can assure that that his onslaught more than MTV Base, made Channel O irrelevant in the Nigerian market ultimately – also spawning 1Music Africa, Nigezie and Hip TV.

Well today, he is the biggest owner not just of TV content but actual TV channels – AND radio channels.

Let’s list them out for you.

ONTV (entertainment and lifestyle) – Terrestial (and presently the most watched TV channel in Lagos, according to Media Facts)

ONTV Max (entertainment and lifestyle) – DSTV

Spice TV (fashion) – DSTV

Soundcity (music) – DSTV

Trybes TV (movies) – GoTV

Televista (telenovelas) – GoTV

Then there is Urban96 Radio network (launched in July) – which broadcasts from Lagos, but ultimately will reach Abuja, Port Harcourt, Enugu and Uyo. And the data is in yet, but we are absolutely certain, when it’s in, taxi drivers and radio listeners in Lagos will predict now for free, it will be the most-listened-to in Lagos.

And then there is Soundcity 98.5, a radio channel, which aired first, also, in July this year. That is TWO radio stations. Hey God.

AND: He is also set to launch Access TV – a news channel – in the next 15 months. (On the backburner or playing on his other channels for now, there is VillageSquare TV and he has suspended for now Business Television and Front Row Sports TV).

All of this from ONE single office in Lekki. The same office he has had for at least a full decade now.

His story needs be told.

And we will tell it. Because TJ (as we all call him, all of us disciples) is TOO badass, period.

PS: And shout-out to the equally bad-ass Olamide Adedeji, Group Channel Manager, who has been with him for 10 solid years, including that time five years when the business was so broke, he wasn’t paid for almost a year.
