Lagos state will send you to jail if you buy anything from street hawkers

Governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode has declared that anyone caught patronizing street hawkers around the state will be punished.

The governor revealed this while speaking on Your-View talk show on TV Continental on Friday.

Even though street hawking is illegal in the state, it has since time immemorial been a rampant practice as well as common sight to residents of Lagos.

The sight of hawkers weaving around vehicles selling their wares in traffic gridlocks has become the norm around the state despite the illegality of the practice.

Ambode, speaking on the government’s resolve to stop hawking said that the strict enforcement of the law would now be ensured starting from Friday, July 1 and anyone found guilty of hawking would risk six months imprisonment or N90,000 fine.

The governor’s declaration is believed to have been triggered by the death of a street hawker in Maryland on Wednesday after he was hit by a BRT bus.

The death of the hawker caused a violent riot between thugs and BRT drivers which led to the vandalism of some vehicles.
