YNaija’s 12 days of christmas : the clean up

In a lot of ways, 2016 has been a very stressful year. Hopefully, it hasn’t been as stressful for you as it has been for our dear nation, Nigeria.

Still, there is a lot to be thankful for. And so, in our special version of ’12 days of Christmas’, we’ll remind you – with the Good News only – of the reasons why things have not all been bad so far.

Without further ado:

On the sixth day of Christmas

2016 sent to us:

The Clean Up;

a teenage technovator;

PENCOM getting it right;

Wizkid’s international status;

Ayodele Dada;

The Number 1 best female football team in Africa;

The  Ogoni Clean up

Mrs Amina Mohammed should not only be remembered as the Minister who came from the United Nations and then went back before something hit the fan (if it ever does). We must put her down in the books of history as the woman who initiated a process of cleaning up the oil spill the ravaged the Ogoni land for over 12 years without anyone lifting a finger to change a thing nor even starting a serious conversation about it from the government’s end.

On the 2nd of June this year, the current administration launched the process of cleaning up the Ogoni land. This was preceeded by a report of the United Nations report that detailed the extent of the damage caused by the oil spills as well as gave recommendations on how to go about fixing the damage.

Questions have been raised as whether any actual clean up has begun but the fact remains that 2016 brought us a step forward after 12 years and for that we are grateful.
