Today, your boss passed on work that he was supposed to do to you, again, for like the seven hundredth time. He has promised you an unkind email and an appointment with a letter at Human Resources if you don’t do it. Your customers owing you money chose today to collectively put their phones on silent mode. You had a flat tyre. Your lecturer is charging N10,000 for a five-page hand-out. You had a meeting for 2pm at a client’s office but the trip between your office and your client’s which should take twenty-five minutes took two hours and then some. Probably, someone from the Presidency was in town to cut some rope and give a speech. You are having a really bad day.
It was on days like this that Rotimi Akinyele, co-founder Funny Africa was looking for something to decompress with. Something to take his mind off the day that had battered and beaten him. Something to make him laugh. He went online, he didn’t find anything. He decided to start creating funny BBM DPs, memes. They soon became a hit with his contacts. He then decided to take it to Instagram.
And so @funny_african_pics was born. Today the Instagram account is now a business run by two creative entrepreneurs, Akinyele and John Adewusi and has built a following of over 475,000 funny faithfuls. It’s the most followed social media account in Nigeria, if you don’t count wedding pages. Not satisfied with just being a social media page and fully committed to bringing all things uniquely African and funny to a wider audience, the page has now scaled up to a website: www.funnyafrica.com
Laid out simply for easy navigation and consumption, the website covers Funny News, Stories, Pictures, Videos, memes, articles, everything and anything that will make you laugh to the point of tears and perhaps crack a rib or two.
Your boss may be working your last nerve, your customers may be taking the piss, traffic may be doing the most, your lecturer is obviously a robber in a suit and you wish all politicians a one way ticket to where fire burns eternal but who needs all that negativity?
Here, forget all that for a minute. Laugh. Out loud. With reckless abandon. Mouth open. Hand on your chest. Dare you not to.
