4 Nigerian teenage girls invent urine-powered generator… that works

by Rachel Ogbu

If this works, these girls could become stinking rich, literally. Four teenage girls have in Lagos Nigeria have invented a urine powered generator at this year’s Maker Faire Africa.

The event shows off innovations, inventions, and initiatives that solve immediate challenges and problems, and then works to support and propagate them. The teenagers,  Duro-Aina Adebola ,14, Akindele Abiola, 14, Faleke Oluwatoyin ,14 and Bello Eniola, 15, had one of the most interesting inventions at the fair which took place from Monday November , 5 to Tuesday November, 6 in Lagos.

Here’s how it works:

•Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.

•The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder.

•The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas.

•This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator.

•1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity

We are so close to cars powered by water.

  1. Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers?

My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no backup.

Do you have any methods to protect against hackers?

  2. Kip it up dearies……u̶̲̥̅̊ surely can make a̶̲̥̅ change

  3. what are the bi-products? nice innovation though

  4. From now on I'll begin to conserve my urine. This is a breakthrough for Nigeria

  5. it only takes a determined nigerian to achieve great success

  6. am proud of every nigerian who is ready to lift the name of the country high..

  7. Failed to knowledge the fact that electrolytic cell's require electricity…Looks like this was not factored in at all. Is the power generated enough to charge the electrolytic cell and still produce a viable amount of power? I'm not so sure.

    1. I don't think u get d concept and working principle of dis brilliant idea, electrolyte is a chemical substance dat needs to be charged b4 it could work effectively in d case of batteries, but in dis case, it serves as an agent dat neutralizes d urine nd separate its constituents thereby allowing d hydrogen needed to run the generator to be produced. So it doesn't need to be charged b4 it works here

  10. nothing is useless in life.the tank should be connected to the pee

  11. Am extra impressed. I pray our govt. Shouldn't let these talk talents go 2 waste or push them into d urgly hands of d Lebanese or china people dat are ruining this country. I wish I am rich now. I will blinding invest in these children. Pls rich and wealthy Nigerian invest on these children they are the future of these country.
