Sex addiction can be best described as a progressive intimacy disorder characterised by compulsive sexual behaviour.
However, it is important to note that sex addiction is not simply an excuse for irresponsible sexual behaviour; it is truly a disorder that causes uncontrolled sexual impulses. Bipolar disorder
Patients with bipolar disorder are known to switch between manic and depressive states. During a manic state the patient has a distinct state of elevated mood and energy levels that can take the form of euphoria. In such conditions they engage in high-risk activities, sex addiction being one of them.
Borderline personality disorder
A borderline personality patient is prone to emotional instability and impulsive behaviour. Experts point out a general pattern of addictions which commonly include unsafe sexual activities.
Dependent personality disorder
Dependent personality disorder is also commonly called love addiction. These love addicts use sex to feel loved and can easily become sex addicts by basing their entire identity on the relationships they depend on.
Post-traumatic stress disorder
Survivors of childhood sexual abuse are often reported to repeat the pattern of their abuse as they subconsciously engage in compulsive sexual activities as an attempt to gain control on their childhood trauma.
Gender identity disorder
People suffering from gender identity disorder are usually confused about their sexual orientation and end up engaging in compulsive sexual behaviour to figure out their concerns.
Sexual disorders
People with sexual disorders like pedophilia and exhibitionism are known to exhibit traits of sex addictions. This many not always be the case but these patients need much more treatment as their acts can victimse others.
