The Summer Olympics in Rio De Janiero may have ended but the memories that captured the Games will forever remain in our hearts.
Who can forget the Usain Bolt‘s cheeky smile for the camera just before he crossed the finish line to win the 100m semi-final or Shaune Miller‘s controversial dive to beat Allyson Felix to the gold medal in the Women’s 400m final?
Controversial or not, these were the moments that made millions of people turn their attention to the games in the historic Brazilian city.
In light of this,we have selected top 10 priceless moments from the games;
- Bolting away! – The fastest man in the world at the moment, Usain Bolt smiles for the camera just before he wins the 100m semi-final.
2. Diving for Gold! – Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller wins the women’s 400m gold with a controversial dive across the finish line ahead of the USA’s Allyson Felix. The rules state that a runner has finished a race when any part of the torso – not just head or fingers or arms – has passed the line.
3. Sometimes, it’s not all about winning! – The spirit of sportsmanship was exhibited between New Zealand’s Nikki Hamblin and USA’s Abbey D’Agostino.
D’Agostino had a cramp during the women’s 5,000m heat and Hamblin paused to help her up. Earlier on in the race, D’Agostino had done the same for Hamblin after they collided.
This sporting behaviour earned them praises from audiences worldwide which led to them being given slots at the 5000m final.
4. Breaking political barriers – The unifying characteristic of the Olympics was proven yet again as this picture of two gymnasts from South and North Korea – two countries who are experiencing frosty relations – taking a selfie hit the internet.
5. Cultural diversity – Photos of the Egyptian beach volleyball team clad in hijab, long sleeve tees and leggings against their competitors from other countries showed the multi-cultural diversity the Olympics served audiences across the world.
6. Love wins – China’s Qin Kai proposed to his diver girlfriend while she received her silver medal in the 3 meter springboard event.
7. Is it safe or not? – Another talking point of the games was when one of the diving pools at the swimming arena suddenly turned green.
8. Love in Rio – Brazilian female rugby player Isadora Cerullo kisses volunteer girlfriend Marjorie Enya after she accepted her marriage proposal in Rio de Janeiro.
9. I do this for my people! – Feyisa Lilesa of Ethiopia finished the Olympic marathon in second place with his arms crossed over his head, as a sign of solidarity for the Oromo people, his native group and the largest ethnic group in the country. By speaking out, he may not be able to go home.
