The bombing that took place in the Yelwa area of Bauchi early yesterday morning killed at least 12 people and injured about 30 others. The suicide bomber broke tried to break through a barrier.

The barricade was located near two churches, Harvest Field Church and Living Faith Church in Yelwa, and a church service had just finished when the explosion happened. The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Mohammed Ladan, said the suicide bomber driving a Honda Civic car, attempted to break through the barrier unto the Church premises, but hit a barricade.

The resulting explosion however collapsed part of the Living Faith Church and many of those standing outside the church were injured by the blast itself.

The commissioner said, “The suicide bomber died on the spot, while nine persons so far have been confirmed dead and 27 others are receiving treatment at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.”

No group has as of yet come forward to take responsibility for the attack, but many fear that it could be the work of terrorist group Boko Haram. They have in recent months staged several bombing against churches and government institutions and ThisDay newspaper.
