AFCON 2015: The Avram Grant curse strikes again

by Mark Bassey

The Black Stars of Ghana coached by Avram Grant, were slight favourites to win this year’s Africa Cup of Nations.

On Saturday, at his press conference before the final against Ivory Coast, Grant appeared to be under little or no pressure and even made a little sarcastic joke.

“I’m going to call John Terry for some advice,” the Israeli replied, when asked if the game might go to penalties.

Odd joke.

Almost seven years ago, on a cold night in Russia, Terry was a kick away from winning the Champions League for Chelsea for the first time. He slipped and his spot kick hit the bar.

It’s another rainy night, this time in Bata, Equatorial Guinea, where Africa’s newest champions will be crowned. 120 minutes of goalless football after, the lottery of penalties will decide the conquerors.

As it was in Moscow against Manchester United, Grant’s team failed at the final hurdle again. And the tactician is probably wondering why he chipped in that John Terry joke.

One wonders who he is on the phone to – the Nigeria Football Federation maybe?
