@AmbodeObsarver, KraksTV, Bizzle Osikoya… See the #YNaijaPowerList for Social media

Bizzle Osikoya YNaija

The Fifth year of the #YNaijaPowerList gathers the biggest and most influential figures in social media. From a barbed Twitter account chronicling life in the big city, to social media influencers and celebrities in their own right, these are the big 10.

@AmbodeObsarver

The breakout Twitter handle of 2016 has to be this tongue in cheek self-anointed profiler of the activities of Lagos state and its governor, Akinwunmi Ambode. @AmbodeObsarver announces itself the unofficial official technical, physical and spiritual adviser and the nearly 55,000 followers certainly approve of this appointment. The handle captures the hustle, bustle and soul of Lagos state in witty, irreverent and sometimes LOL tweets and pictures.

Gidi Traffic YNaija@Gidi_Traffic

The worst part about Lagos living? The traffic jams right? Enter Gidi Traffic, an online social service that is present primarily on micro blogging platform Twitter. Gidi_Traffic employs crowdsourcing to provide traffic updates in real time to residents of the city of Lagos and its environs. With over 750,000 Twitter accounts (the number increases daily) following, traffic situation requests are placed and retweeted alongside inane queries like the price of the dollar on the parallel market.

Fati Abubakar

Armed with a camera and an Instagram handle, @bitsofborno, Fati Abubakar strolls the streets of her hometown, Maiduguri and attempts to capture that other side of the terrorism ravaged state the mainstream media will not show you. Inspired by Instagram handles like @humansofny, Abubakar’s simple but powerful pictures of humans triumphing in the midst of affliction and their heart-warming captions have been able to tell a narrative of Borno beyond death and destruction.

Haneefah Adam YNaija
Haneefah Adam

Haneefah Adam

Thanks to 24 year old Haneefah Adam, Barbie has a relatable Hijab wearing cousin, and her name is Hijarbie. The latest makeover for the classic Mattel doll comes courtesy of a Nigerian creative artist who decided to open an Instagram account dressing the famous Barbie dolls in clothes she made for herself. Adams is definitely on to something as Hijarbie has been a huge hit, showing at the Istanbul Modest Fashion Week. She also creates edible art with the IG handle @muslimahanie.

Chuey Chu

There must be something about this Pulse.ng anchor and all round funny dude that make celebrities and random people alike not know how to behave whenever he is around. Whether he is getting singer Seyi Shay to (mis)pronounce the spelling of T-W-O or leading an unsuspecting fellow into placing Ijebu-Ode on Lagos Island, Chu is an equal opportunity offender. His Strivia videos quickly become viral sensations and his 17.9 thousand followers on Instagram are there to make them so.

Mercy Aigbe Gentry

Remember that time Mercy Aigbe Gentry made a fuss because she didn’t appear on the ThisDay Style list for best dressed post-AMVCAs? Well she cleaned up since then. The Nollywood actress who favours Yoruba movies has one of the most buzzy social media profiles and she deploys it accordingly. Whether she is hiring personal assistants online or showing off her latest high profile magazine cover, Mrs Gentry knows her 1million strong Instagram followers got her back.

KraksTV

The online television platform conceived by Femi Bakre and Adeyeri Michael has in about two short years become the choice tv platforms for millennials who want to watch their television on the go. A big hit with the under-25 crowd, kraks.tv’s video hosting platform focuses mainly on hosting short hilarious clips. The platform also allows users to share submissions on the website by submitting YouTube links.

Toke Makinwa YNaijaToke Makinwa

Love her or hate her, Toke Makinwa has come to stay and this durability even in the face of personal upheavals may be her biggest strength. On social media, Makinwa has found a way to turn all the attention to gold as she has become the go to girl for brands looking to cash in on some celebrity endorsements. Her Instagram followers,- over 700,000- of them trust her enough to purchase whatever item she is selling; from make-up kits to fake deep inspirational quotes.

Cohann Nnata

Retrocode was started by Cohann Daddy ‘Code Nnata all the way from Port Harcourt, Rivers state early 2015 and in a short spell, has sold out hundreds of vintage shirts and gained the attention of celebrities. Nnata has done this mostly through that only a Twitter presence for the first year of the brand’s existence and an Instagram account later on. Cohan also popularized the ‘tab’ system, a system that allows people anonymously buy shirts for others by opening a tab for them.

Bizzle Osikoya

The former head of new media and A&R at Mavin records may have parted ways with the super label but he still wields plenty of influence on social media, especially on Instagram where his 102,000 followers hang on to his every tip on what is hot and what is trending. Those in the know recognize that in the flighty world of social media overlords and influencers, if you are looking to get your brand or product out there, then Bizzle is the man to call.
