5 potential winners at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2016

Africa’s biggest movie night is upon us… as everything is set for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) 2016.

As we gear up for the awards, YNaija has compiled a list of 5 potential actors or movies that may possibly win tonight.

1. Funke Akindele

This is one actress who has shone since she hit our screens in the late 90’s with the family-oriented television series I Need to Know in which she starred as Bisi.

However, she didn’t receive wide-spread recognition until the release of her self-produced comedy blockbuster movies- Jenifa and Omo Ghetto 1, 2, 3 in 2008 and 2010, 2011, 2014 respectively.

In 2013, Funke Akindele was nominated in the Best Actress category for her captivating and emotional role in the Tunde Kelani-directed -Maami, however, she lost to Jackie Appiah (The Perfect Picture) in the keenly contested category. She also lost the Best Actress in a Comedy award to Mercy Johnson on the night.

However, at the next edition in 2014, she walked away with the Best Actress in a Comedy award for The Return Of Sheri Koko after claiming 2 other nominations in the same category.

This time around, she is nominated in the Best Actress in a Comedy (Movie/TV Series) category for her role in the sequel series, Jenifa Diaries.

Although, she will battle it out with the likes of Ini Edo, new comers like Lepacious Bose, Abmbola Craig, Nana Mensah– BUT – we see Funke pipping the lot to win the award, considering her eye-catching performance as hilarious ‘big girl’ wannabe in Jenifa Diaries.

2. Genevieve Nnaji

One cannot overemphasize how talented this Nigerian actress is.

Over the years she has etched her name into the hearts of movie lovers in Nigeria and beyond while her undiluted acting prowess has also captured audiences across board. This has elevated her to the status of one of the most celebrated Nigerian actresses.

The screen diva- who was acknowledged for her role in The Mirror Boy at the inaugural edition of the awards in 2013- has been nominated in the Best Actress in a Drama (Movie/TV Series) category for her stellar production- Road to Yesterday.

Genevieve’s emotional performance may see her win this category although it would be a hard-fought win as she is up against the likes of Nse Ikpe-Etim (The Visit), Mary Lazarus (Don’t Cry for Me), Belinda Effah (Stop), Fulu Mugovhani (Ayanda) and Adesua Etomi (Falling).

3. Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana

Talk about someone who will get you laughing in no time, it’s Falz the Bahd guy. It came as a surprise to many- even to the musician himself- when he was nominated for the Best Actor in A Comedy (Movie/TV Series) category at this year’s AMVCA for his minor role alongside Funke Akindele in Jenifa’s diaries.

The entertainer is up against the likes of Kelechi Udegbe (Officer Titus), IK Ogbonna (Stop) Ime ‘Bishop’ Umoh (Caught in the Act) and Bowoto Jephthah (Head Gone).

Folarin has been touted to take this home- owing to his rib-cracking delivery as well as his heavy social media presence and following.

We see a lot of votes coming his way.

4. Taxi Driver (Oko Ashewo)

This is one movie that is so hilarious, it outsold the James Bond movie- Spectre at Nigerian cinemas.

Produced by Don Omope, the movie revolves around working in Lagos at night as a Taxi Driver.

Taxi Driver stars Femi Jacobs, Ijeoma Grace Agu, Afeez Oyetoro, Odunlade Adekola, among others.

While some have criticised it for its ‘poorly written’ story-line, many have praised its amazing cinematography and general production. This would possibly see it come out tops in the Best Indigenous Language Movie/TV Series – Yoruba category.

5. Road to Yesterday

This epic drama is expected to win one or two awards, after claiming 6 nominations- Best overall movie (Africa), Best writer of a movie/TV series, Best Director, Best actress in a drama, Genevieve Nnaji (Movie/TV series), Best picture and Best Movie – West Africa (Drama/comedy).
