Labelled a ‘witch’ and left on the edge of death, Hope, who’s between two to three-years-old, was rescued in 2015, by Anja Ringgren Lovén, founder of the African Children’s Aid Education and Development Foundation (ACAEDF).
Lovén, a Danish woman, saved the little boy from his 8-month ostracization on the streets of Uyo, capital of Akwa Ibom.
She named him ‘Hope’ while she also appealed to her fellow Danes to help raise $1 million for his road to recovery- a feat which was successful.
Many months down the line, Hope was much more healthier- far from the malnourished version of himself- and full of laughter, joy and hope.
At the time of his rescue, Lovén had said: “I’ve seen much here in Nigeria over the last 3 years. I have spared you for many experiences when we’ve been on the rescue operations. Thousands of children are being accused of being witches and we’ve both seen torture of children, dead children and frightened children. This footage shows why I fight. Why I sold everything I own.”
“Why I’m moving out in uncharted territory. Why the new documentary is so important for dinnødhjælps work so we can shout world leaders up so we can get focused on superstition in Nigeria. I hope you will all see with when Anja Africa is being shown on TV. Together we can make the biggest difference. I have chosen to call the boy ‘Hope’, for right now, we all hope that he survives.”
And Hope survived.
Anja Lovén has now shared photo-proof of his survival- images of a much healthier Hope surrounded by other children in an orphanage.
In a jubilant and excited tone, she wrote: “Finally finally finally !!!! Today Hope was discharged from the hospital. The children have been so excited all day. My son David Jr. and I are now back in Denmark because tomorrow I will start my tour around the country.”
“And oh how I wish I was there today. Looking at these pictures of the children playing with Hope makes me totally speechless. Our dream came true! Can you imagine! This is what humanity is all about! Children see magic because they look for it and now Hope has finally found his magic.”
