“Bachelorette” contestant Lincoln Adim was convicted of a sex crime and, gosh, he’s from Nigeria

Up until yesterday, I had no idea who Lincoln Adim was. The reason being that I’m yet to work up some enthusiasm for this new season of the ABC dating series The Bachelorette, even though Rachel Lindsay made history in 2017 by becoming the first black bachelorette after thirteen seasons.

Already in its third week, The Bachelorette has been blighted by scandals, but nothing compares to the flood of reports that Lincoln Adim, a contender on the show, was convicted last month in connection with a 2016 groping episode.

To put things clearly: Lincoln pleaded guilty to indecent assault and battery for groping a woman on a harbour cruise in Boston. Before I go on, here’s a clip introducing Lincoln as one of Becca’s suitors and, bummer, he’s from Nigeria.

Yeah, he’s cute, perfect white teeth and an endearing self-consciousness in front of the camera – but lying about having engaged in or having been charged with any sexual misconduct sort of makes Lincoln a monster. You see, before suitors or contenders are cast on the franchise, a well-respected and highly experienced third party is employed to do elaborate background checks.

So if you have a history of murdering people’s pets, which is just gross, or doing something as indisputably troubling as stalking, then it will be revealed. The Bachelorette’s production company Warner Bros. are, at the moment, puzzled at how such disturbing detail in Lincoln’s past could have gone past their radar. In a summary of a statement to US Weekly, the company is investigating the matter, which is the right thing to do. And while they are at it, maybe they can fire the third party?

On the whole, this does not look good for the credibility of The Bachelorette as the show could witness a drop in ratings. According to the show’s website, 26-year-old Lincoln was born in Nigeria, was named after Abraham Lincoln (like, duh), lived in Boston and attended the University of Kentucky and now lives in Los Angeles. His LinkedIn page says he is an account executive for the technology company Oracle.

The next episode of The Bachelorette airs next Monday, which I will definitely watch, and it will be interesting to see how Becca will perceive Lincoln. But, whatever happens, he is not deserving of a rose.
