“Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman wins Best Performance at the MTV Movie & TV Awards

It was to be expected that Marvel’s Black Panther would bag awards, given how the superhero blockbuster was among the top films leading in nominations in this year’s edition of the MTV Movie & TV awards. Winning first in the Best Hero category last night, Chadwick Boseman thanked fans and did a surprising thing by presenting his award to real-life hero James Shaw Jr.

If you recall, Shaw is the guy who disarmed a gunman during a mass shooting at a Waffle House in Tennessee, and then became famous for his heroism. “This is going to live at your house,” Boseman said, handing the popcorn-shaped trophy to Shaw.

What a gesture. The second award that went to Chadwick Boseman was for Best Performance. Whoop, whoop. “It’s such a joy to be able to do what you love, and to share that with the people that I worked with in this film is just the greatest thing in the world,” Boseman said in his acceptance speech.

Boseman won in a field that also included Timotheé Chalamet’s performance in the queer tearjerker Call Me by Your Name, Ansel Elgort in Baby Driver, Daisy Ridley in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and Saoirse Ronan in Lady Bird. Boseman’s Black Panther is expected to return in Avengers 4, followed by a planned Black Panther sequel. The MTV Movie & TV Awards (originally known just as the MTV Movie Awards) began in 1992, and the TV component was added just last year.
