BREAKING: ECOWAS court says Dasuki’s arrest unlawful, orders FG to pay N15 million fine

The arrest and detention of former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki on Tuesday was declared as unlawful and arbitrary by The Court of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

According to Premium Times the court also directed the federal government to pay Dasuki 15 million naira as damages.

A three-member panel led by Justice Friday Nwoke faulted the arrest of Dasuki without a search warrant, stating that it negates the provisions of Section 28 of the Nigerian Police Act.

The court said the claim by the federal government that security operatives at Dasuki’s residence stopped them from issuing the search warrant was unacceptable.

Justice Nwoke said the search warrant presented before the ECOWAS court was not certified and therefore lacks verifiable authenticity.

The former NSA was arrested over his role in the $2.1 billion illegal arms deal and for illegal possession of fire arms.
