Buhari orders evacuation of Nigerian students after hurricane in Dominican Republic

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the evacuation of Nigerian students from Dominican Republic.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the Presidential order.

What happened:

Hurricane Maria, ranked a Category 4 storm, raged through the Caribbean, including parts of the Dominican Republic with heavy rain and high winds, killing no fewer than 10 people last week Thursday.

Why it matters:

Nigerian students recently travel to the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean to study Medicine, which makes it easier for them to transfer to the United States and Europe for the completion of their medical programmes.

The Presidential order:

  • Shehu said the affected students had already been evacuated.
  • The students will be moved to Brazil where they do not need visas for onward journey to Nigeria.

Shehu added, “The President was deeply touched when he learnt that some of them escaped with nothing but the clothes on them.”
