But why are there soldiers, armoured trucks on Lagos roads? (See Photos)

Following widespread speculations that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) may have decided to postpone the forthcoming elections, soldiers and armoured personnel carriers have been sighted on the streets of Lagos.

Several people on social media claim to have spotted convoys of military men and tanks on different parts of the metropolitan city.

Some pictures showing soldiers and the said tanks were shared on Twitter to this effect.

From Victoria Island to Oworonsoki, security forces are stationed in strategic places, while an army convoy has reportedly blocked Ikorodu road.

Another Twitter user reports that “military convoy of APC, trucks & soldiers just went through Ikoyi with sirens blazing.”

While another wrote: “Just drove past this convoy on Lekki toll Gate. Let us all stay calm.”

Whether or not the emergence of the security forces in Lagos metropolis is related to the reported postponement of the general elections, remains to be ascertained.

Weeks ago, the candidates of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, Goodluck Jonathan and his opponent from the All Progressives Congress (APC), signed a peace accord to promote peace before, during and after the elections, no matter the outcome.

Both candidates have also, on different occasions, reiterated the importance of keeping the exercise free, fair and non-violent.

We’ll bring you more on this, as it develops.
