Court in Oyo remands farmer over murder of 15-year-old nomad

A 35-year-old farmer, Salisu Kwame, was brought before an Ibadan Chief  Magistrates’ Court at Iyaganku, on Monday for allegedly killing a 15-year-old boy, Haruna Atiku.

According to reports, the accused inflicted machete cuts on Haruna who was a nomad, for allegedly allowing his cows to graze on his farmland.

The incident was related to the court by the prosecutor, Adewale Amos, who said the Mr. Kwame committed the alleged act on July 12 at Alaga area of Ibadan  and is arraigned on a one-count charge of murder.

Leadership reports:

Inspector Amos said  the victim was rushed to an undisclosed hospital,  but died from  complications of the injury.

According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes  section 316 and punishable under section 319 of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol II Laws of Oyo state of Nigeria, 2000.

The plea of the defendant was, however,  not taken.

Chief Magistrate  Fatima Badrudeen ordered  the defendant to be remanded in Agodi Prison.

She directed the police to forward  a  duplicate copy of the  case file to the  Director of  Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The case was  adjourned to Sept. 18  for further hearing.
