Ekweremadu must be removed from office – APC

It would appear that the All Progressive Congress (APC) is insisting on the removal or resignation of Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President.

According to a report by the Punch, the latest committee reshuffle made by Saraki as peace move towards aggrieved Senators and the party wasn’t well received by the ruling APC because Ekweremadu wasn’t removed.

Saraki, who emerged as the Senate President against his party’s wishes, had fallen out of favour with the APC establishment who had the emergence of Senator Ahmed Lawan as Senate President.

As part of reconciliatory moves, Saraki had on Thursday appointed members of the Senate Unity Forum (SUF) -the group that had opposed him- as chairmen of “juicy senate” committees.

Speaking on the issue, a prominent member of the APC told the Punch that Ekweremadu should be removed as the Deputy Senate President, noting that Ekweremadu had never hidden his dislike for President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said, “We are happy with what he (Saraki) did with the committees, but Ekweremadu cannot remain as the deputy senate president.  When the PDP was in power, opposition parties did not produce the deputy senate president.”

Another highly placed APC leader said, “What Saraki has done is not enough. Ekweremadu must leave that position.”

A member of the SUF, Senator  Adesoji Akanbi, noted that the group will not back down on the call for senate leadership.

He said, “We all know what the party wanted from day one. Initially, when the leadership of the Senate was to be formed, we all know where the party stood. Up till now, the party has not changed its position and will not.

“Those who have been offered positions have the choice to accept or not to accept. I am sure that it will not affect their loyalty to their party. The Kabir Marafa and Suleiman Hunkuyi that I know, are loyal to the party, just like any other members of the SUF which I belong.”

Akanbi pointed out that, “We from the South-West also believe in the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. If that (loyalty to the three) is a sin, we are prepared to commit it. If it is a sin to stand by those three – APC, Buhari and Tinubu – we will continue to be sinners.”
