Entertainment Roundup: Wizkid’s big win at the MOBO Awards; Frank Edoho’s new show | More stories

Wizkid

Here are the biggest stories that made the rounds in entertainment yesterday and others that unravelled while you slept – and are still buzzing today.

MOBO Awards 2017

The 2017 Edition of the MOBO awards has ended. It is held annually in the U.K. to recognise artists of any ethnicity or nationality performing black music.

Stormzy came out the biggest winner of the night, while Nigeria’s Wizkid pulled up a big feat, defeating the likes of Jay Z, Cardi B, Kendrick Lamar and so on to win the Best International Act.

Also, Davido won Best African Act.

Big ups to both of them! And, of course, all the other winners.

The Avengers

A new enemy has come out and the Avengers have to defeat this one too.

Marvel has released its first public trailer for Avengers: Infinity War.

The trailer arrives five months after the first footage was screened at Disney’s biennial D23 convention and then a week later at San Diego Comic-Con. Marvel brought out a number of its Avengers: Infinity War actors to debut the footage, at both D23 and SDCC, but that footage was never officially released. Leaked versions of the trailer made their way online a couple of days later.

Avengers: Infinity War will also act as Spider-Man’s third movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following a short introduction in Captain America: Civil War and his most recent feature-length debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming. It will follow the release of Black Panther, which is set to debut on Feb. 16, 2018.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released on May 4, 2018.

Jay Z discusses race, marriage and his mother’s sexuality

American rapper, Shawn Corey Carter, known professionally as JAY-Z, covered the most recent issue of The New York Times Style Magazine, and sat with its executive editor, Dean Baquet to discuss race, therapy, having a family, and his mother’s sexuality.

Citing his song The Story of O.J. from the album 4.44, Jay Z said, “I’m specifically speaking to us. And about who we are and how do you maintain the sense of self while pushing it forward and holding us to have a responsibility for our actions. Because in America, it is what it is. And there’s a solution for us: If we had a power base together, it would be a much different conversation than me having a conversation by myself and trying to change America by myself.

He adds, “Well, an ideal way is to have a president that says, “I’m open to dialogue and fixing this.” That’s ideal. But it’s still happening in a good way because you can’t have a solution until you start dealing with the problem: What you reveal, you heal.”

When asked if it was difficult to say: “I’m gonna talk about the problems in our marriage. I’m gonna talk about how we almost lost things.” And for his wife to say: “I’m gonna talk about my pain and anger at you,” in relation to their confessional, open albums, he said, “It happened — we were using our art almost like a therapy session. And we started making music together.

And then the music she was making at that time was further along. So her album came out as opposed to the joint album that we were working on. Um, we still have a lot of that music. And this is what it became. There was never a point where it was like, “I’m making this album.” I was right there the entire time.”

On his mother being gay, JAY-Z said he’d been aware since he was a teenager, adding that no one spoke about it, and it was just something everyone knew. He said, “We never spoke about it. Until, like, recently, now we start having these beautiful conversations, and just really getting to know each other. We were always good friends but now we’re really great friends. You know. And we were just talking as friends. And then she was sharing that she was in love. She can be herself [now]. She doesn’t have to hide from her kids or feel like she’s embarrassing her kids. It was a much different time then. [Now] she can just live her full life, her whole life, and be her.”

Meghan Markle on her journey out of Suits

Meghan Markle‘s bosses on the hit TV show Suits planned a year ago to write her out of the show as they knew that her romance with Prince Harry was the real deal.

I knew from a year ago that this relationship was burgeoning,” said show creator Aaron Korsh.

And I had a decision to make because I didn’t want to intrude and ask her, “hey what’s going on and what are you going to do?”. So collectively with the writers, we decided to take a gamble that these two people were in love and it was going to work out.”

The franchise to air international television show, The Price Is Right, has been granted to Genesis Studios, a television and film production company in Nigeria.

At the event, Frank Edoho, the former host of the popular Tv show, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and Emmanuel Essien, popularly known as Mannie,’ were unveiled as the host and announcer of the game show, respectively.

Edoho said he was thrilled by the uniqueness of the project, adding, “This is a show bursting with energy from the start to finish.”
