Delta State police commissioner has said no fewer than 23 females whose unwanted pregnancies were terminated in a native home have died after drinking some herbal concoction.

Ikechukwu Aduba said they discovered a home where native doctors, quack nurses carry out illegal abortion and detectives have arrested the operators.

He also said that upon interrogation, they confessed to the crime claiming they were trained in traditional medicine, especially in the use of concoction to terminate unwanted pregnancies.

The mass homicide was brought to the open after another woman died recently from complication following treatments.

Identified as 22-year-old Endurance, who was a house-help from Ugborikoko in Uvwie local government area, Aduba said took ill and was rushed to the illegal clinic where she died as a result of complications from the abortion carried out there.

Leadership reports:

A test conducted on her death by medical experts showed that she was pregnant and attempted to abort it at the hands of the native doctors and quack nurses in the home.

One of the suspects, the police boss disclosed, identified as Ufuoma had made useful statements, adding that the police recovered different bottles with concoction and charms tied around sticks including locally made guns.
