On Saturday, a showdown ensued between members of the Peoples Democratic Party and officials of the Department of State Security at the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja.
The DSS officials, numbering about 15, had come to the tribunal sitting, reportedly to arrest one of the witnesses that testified before the court.
But supporters of Governor Nyesom Wike, resisted their attempt to arrest the witness, Emannuel Philips, who is a retired DSS Commander.
After giving his testimony, the DSS officials immediately swooped on him as he stepped out of the court room.
They tried to take him away in one of their vehicles but Wike’s supporters stopped them, saying that they could not go anywhere with Philips.
More supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, who were inside the tribunal joined Wike’s supporters to insist that the DSS operatives should produce an arrest warrant from a competent court.
The DSS operatives had no choice but to release the witness, who was immediately taken away from the court premises by Wike’s supporters and some lawyers.
