[The Injustice Blog] New Ogun Polytechnic: The road to 2019

The decision of Governor  Ibikunle Amosun to establish a new Polytechnic in the state is nothing but a political ploy to swerve votes for him and his political party, come 2019.

As close watchers of Ogun politics, this Polytechnic is an attempt by the governor to be ahead in 2019.

Also, there is an ongoing clamour for the zoning of Ogun State governorship in 2019 to Ogun West Senatorial District. The governor was officially informed of this on June 7, 2017, while playing host to the Traditional Council of Ogun West Senatorial District.

As simple as it may seem for the Governor to install a successor from the district, so also will it be difficult for him to impose a preferred individual.

The challenge posed by his arch rival in the state, Chief Olusegun Osoba, who is projecting Senator Solomon Adeola Olamilekan from the district for the same position is a main stumbling block for him. These two personalities (Amosun and Osoba) both enjoy some form of cult followership in the state as a result the battle ground is set already.

Amosun means business, hence, his decision to establish a new Polytechnic in the region after spending seven years in office, and less than two years to the end of his administration.

However, as interesting as the news of the new Polytechnic may sound, it’s viability will always be a point of contention to onlookers.

At a time the existing institutions are experiencing financial crisis coupled with dearth of infrastructure, establishing another institution is not for the good of the state. Building structures in the new location may not be an issue as the Governor, who is playing the political game with education might get a loan to build the structures but what about its sustainability?

Politicians are allowed to play politics anyway they chose to, but it should not be done with education – just as he is doing with the new Ogun State Polytechnic.
