Last week on #Rubbin'minds: A tale of three newsmakers

by Ifreke Inyang

The last Rubbin’ Minds show was an exciting one. Usually, the one hour programme starts with a review of the issues that made headlines during the week. But last week, the focus was in Chude Jideonwo’s words “not on the news but on the newsmakers”. True enough, the guests were Karen Igho, one of the winners of the Big Brother Amplified reality show; Yeka Onka, the first ever Nigerian Idol; and Funke Akindele, the super movie producer cum actor.

First up was Karen Igho. She was such a bundle of energy and the interviewers could barely keep up with her. “I can’t be hyperactive all the time. I’m human,” she amdmitted. “But I am someone who works with energy.” It was this infectious energy that drew viewers of BBA to her and made her a firm favourite on the show she eventually emerged a winner. Karen Igho (Igho means ‘money’) comes from the same family with NTA’s Peter Igho & Tosin Igho but she refuted claims that it had anything to do with her winning. “People tried to make a lot of my relationship with Peter Igho, but I told them Peter Igho is his own man,” she said. Karen also touched on the her boob job where she declared: “There’s pain behind the sexiness.”

The next guest was Yeka. The first ever Nigerian Idol was spotting a rather interesting hairstyle and was really excited to be on the show. “I have never been a star before,” she squealed. “I am just like a child learning.” She had indeed come a long way. She attended three Nigerian Idol auditions before she made it to the show. What was it like on the show? “It was tension all the way during the competition. People were even looking up to me!” Yeka replied. Yeka has been working and her first effort was released a few weeks back. “’Follow you’ is what Nigerians want and I gave back to people who voted me,” she said. Her album is also in the works. “I’m working with Cobhams and plan to feature Wizkid, IcePrince Zamani, Omawumi, Tuface Idibia, Waje, etc. on my album too.”

Funke Akindele was on the final segment. It was possibly her first TV appearance after she launched the much anticipated ‘The Return of Jenifa’, the sequel to Jenifa. “I slept in the studio several times to make sure The Return of Jenifa was edited properly,” she revealed. The Jenifa brand has become so huge over time and Funke let us into who inspires her. She said: “Tyler Perry is my role model. I am doing with Jenifa what he’s doing with Madea.” She has done well with the brand and is branching off into other things including a foundation for young people – and she says this was the initial idea. “The only thing I wanted to do when I wrote Jenifa was to pass a message to young people on campuses,” she asserted. “Yes, I want to make money from The Return of Jenifa, but I also want to reach out to young people to chase their dreams.” Funke ended the segment by playing herself, Jenifa and Lefty (from Omo Ghetto).

And on that comical note, we came to the end of yet another interesting edition of Rubbin’ Minds. Rubbin’ Minds makes a return this weekend, tune in to Channels TV this Sunday by 3pm or watch online via: www.ynaija.com/rubbin-minds.
