[The Legislative Blog]: Reps want bill against sex for marks to include workplaces and religious institutions

The House of Representatives at Thursday’s sitting stepped down a bill that seeks to punish sex offenders in educational institutions.

The lawmakers raised a number of concerns about the bill, some of which include the need for it to cover other spheres of the society including workplaces and religious institutions.

Majority leader, Hon Femi Gbajabiamila said the house needed to consider sexual harassment in other parts of the society so as to come up with what he called “a more comprehensive law”.

House speaker, Hon Yakubu Dogara gave a nod to this submission and moved that the lower chamber would consult with the Senate on the bill.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, seeks to criminalise sexual harassment in tertiary institutions and proposes a five-year jail term for erring lecturers.
