[The Legislative Blog]: Senator Buruji Kashamu’s many woes

Senator Buruji Kashamu representing Ogun East senatorial district is in a lot of trouble but Nigerians are not talking so much about it because “all man for himself”. The embattled Senator has been receiving fresh jabs from different sides, some of which are tied to the drug-related charges brought against him by the United States government.
Surely we all remember that Senator Kashamu is a drug lord and a fugitive (not our words but those of the US government). Series of accusations have been levelled against him dating as far back as 1998; conspiracy to import heroin into the US, drug trafficking amongst others. Now, fresh allegations have been brought against him by a House of Reps member, Oladipupo Adebutu. The representative of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North constituency says Kashamu moved to attack him in the company of 50 thugs a day before the aborted PDP convention in Port Harcourt. Adebutu said he took to his heels when he saw the league of villains coming towards him in the parking area of the Presidential Hotel in Port Harcourt. What a sight it must have been, something like an action movie! 50 thugs led by Senator Kashamu. Who counted? Or never mind…
The Inspector-General of Police made it known today that Kashamu will be invited to tell his side of the story as part of investigations into Adebutu’s claims. They called it an attempted assassination. Kashamu has since denied the allegations but it is blowing up in his face.
The man is in fear that these allegations will lead to him being extradited to the US to face his drug charges. He smells a connivance between Adebutu, the police and the DSS. Such foresight! But a group of people will stop at nothing to make sure Kashamu returns to the United States. The Northern Youth Movement (NYM) have decided to pick on this scared man. They have offered to finance his trip to the US plus hotel and accommodation costs just so Kashamu can clear his name and return in peace to continue his day job as a lawmaker. It’s simple, really. If you’re innocent as you claim, just go to the authorities over there, look them in the eye, tell them stories that touch and come back home. Or since when did people start dreading going to America? Especially Nigerian politicians.
Above all, it’s worrying how people with dirty history like Senator Buruji Kashamu secured a place in President Buhari’s so-called anti-corrupt administration. What did it take to convince constituents at the Ogun East senatorial district to vote this man in?
