Over the past eighteen months the UK urban music scene has witnessed an Afrobeats explosion with pop music mostly from the West African region escaping its niche confines to become the next big thing on mainstream radio and in clubs in England.
Today, the BBC 1Xtra presents ‘The Rise and Rise of Afrobeats’, a fast-paced music documentary in which DJ Edu host of the station’s premiere urban African music show DNA explains all you need to know about the emerging African music genre.
Expect contributions from leading Afrobeats artists including D’Banj (Nigerian Superstar signed to Kanye West’s label), Ghana’s fastest rapper Sarkodie and South African House Music legend Black Coffee, as well as personal insights from other pop stars of African descent including Tinchy Stryder, Estelle and Sway.
Additional commentary will also come from leading Hip-hop radio personality, Tim Westwood, Afrobeats champion; DJ Abrantee, comedian Eddie Kadi, a host of recording artists and DJ’s as well as global African pop culture site Afripopmag’s Phiona Okumu.
Tune in to ‘The Rise and Rise of Afrobeats’ on BBC 1Xtra today from 9 – 10 pm GMT and listen again for 7 days thereafter.
