Argentine international Javier Mascherano has signed a new three-year contract extension with FC Barcelona.

The Barcelona defender was believed to be aggrieved and on the verge of exiting the Nou Camp alongside fellow South American Dani Alves who joined Italian champions Juventus.

Mascherano has been a key part in Luis Enrique’s side as his defensive partnership with Gerard Pique has helped Barcelona develop a solid centre-back pairing.

The contract extension was announced by Albert Soler during the unveiling of new signing, Portugese midfielder André Gomes.
