Since the 60s, beloved sci-fi series Doctor Who has gained a cult following and becoming a significant part of British popular culture. Dr Who’s identity is so rooted in protocol and its founding elements that, when Jodie Whittaker was announced as the first woman to play the titular doctor in 2017, it created a noisy pocket of sexist disapproval in the show’s fanbase.

Whittaker is the 13th person to portray Dr. Who after Peter Capaldi, ushering an unprecedented wind of change that has now blown from the foreground to the background – the iconic series theme which hasn’t changed since 2005.

Since the Whittaker announcement, fans have been eager to find out whether the music will change. You see, I’m not the most ardent follower of the show, but happily, the BBC announced yesterday Segun Akinola as the new composer for the series, taking over from Murray Gold.

Akinola, who has worked scoring various documentaries and short films, will now take over the job of writing the music of Doctor Who‘s eleventh season. Per a BBC statement, Akinola’s duties will also include creating “a fresh take on the legendary theme,” and therefore confirming that a new version is coming (which isn’t a massive surprise but hey, it’s good to know for sure) and that it will probably be different to the version that accompanied Peter Capaldi’s adventures.

Mildly offended that some media outlets are referring to the Nigerian-British composer  as “up and coming,” Akinola is an alumni of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ 2017 “Breakthrough Brit” program. All the best to Akinola on his new coveted job.
