Netflix Debunks Rumour of Exiting Nigerian Entertainment Industry

Top 5 Stories Of The Day | Netflix Exits Nigeria, Cites Inflation as Biggest Investment Challenge

Shortly after Nigerians went on a rampage on social media, believing that Netflix would be exiting the country and, along with them, the hopes of new Netflix original Nigerian shows, the global streaming platform debunked the news and reaffirmed that it was here to stay.

In six years, Netflix has played a pivotal role by shaping the future of Nigerian films in the country and the global scene.

The platform has helped promote Nigerian films, bringing them closer to a larger audience while promoting African and Nigerian stories, cultures and traditions.

According to the trending fake news, the global streaming platform Netflix allegedly announced that it would discontinue its operations in Nigeria due to the significant inflation, decline in subscribers and the weakened naira to US dollar exchange rate.

Netflix allegedly announced its exit from Nigeria, but that did not mean the streaming platform would cease functioning. Still, instead, it suggested it would no longer sponsor or fund Nigerian original films.

However, the rumour has been debunked as Netflix released a statement saying, “We are not exiting Nigeria. We will continue to invest in Nigerian stories to delight our members.”
