Commentary: Oh wow! NFF has chosen to blame AFCON woes on CAF

After a topsy turvy campaign which culminated in Nigeria’s absence from the Africa Cup of Nations in 2017, the Nigerian Football Federation has chosen to blame its woes on the Confederation of African Football instead of the lackadaisical, indifferent display of the Super Eagles -as they drew 1-1 with Egypt at home and got trashed 1-0 by the Pharaohs during the return match.

The NFF executive committee led by its President -Amaju Pinnick has chosen to extend the embarrassment of not qualifying for the African tournament for the second time in a row, by dragging the African football governing body to the Court of Arbitration for Sports.

Why? – For not making an option for best losers after Chad – who were in Nigeria’s group – withdrew from the qualifiers.

“It is rather unfortunate that Chad, one of the teams in the qualification group, suddenly pulled out of the race, leaving only three teams left in the group, and only the winner of the the group guaranteed qualification,” says NFF Assistant Director of Communications Demola Olajire.

In essence, the Super Eagles of Nigeria were banking on ‘worst-case scenario’ to qualify for the African continent’s most prestigious football tournament.

It’s rather unfortunate.

Olajire contined: “This appeared to have taken away our worst–case scenario of qualification. However, our legal unit is looking at the propriety of changing the rules midstream.”

This is rather belittling, no?
