It is a well known fact that former governor of Bayelsa state, late Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, was alleged to have corruptly looted the common wealth of the state.

What is not clear is how long the looting took place and how much was actually misappropriated by the former Governor.

According to Premium Times, Alamieyeseigha, who died on October 10, 2015, at the age of 63, was also involved in the international Panama Papers scandal which revolves around shady law firm, Mossack Fonseca.

On September 15, 2005, three months after the swearing-in of Alamieyeseigha, inquires were made by some agents to confirm the availability of a company name which the Governor was interested in registering in the British Virgin Island.

The late governor is said to have incorporated the company, Solomon & Peters Limited, in British Virgin Islands.

The company was registered through Mossack Fonseca as an ‘International Business Company’ on October 1, 1999, with an authorised capital of US$50,000 divided into 50,000 shares.

The report further stated that Alamieyesiegha appointed himself as the sole Director and Secretary of the company and allegedly used the company to stash his ill gotten wealth over the next five years.

Mossack Fonseca, the shady Panamanian law firm in the eye of the PanamaPaper scandal, stepped down as the administrator of Alamieyesiegha’s company following his infamous arrest in the UK.

The law firm also gave up documents about the late governor to the government of Panama.

It was discovered that Alamieyesiegha owed several properties in Nigeria, United Kingdom and the USA.

He was impeached by the Bayelsa state House of Asembly and sentenced to two years in prison by a Nigerian court after pleading guilty to corruption
