State governors can afford to pay salaries – Peter Obi

While most Nigerian states are struggling to pay workers’ salaries, a former governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi believes the situation can be better managed by state governments.

Obi said state governors would be able to pay salaries of workers if they are prudent in their spending and prioritise judiciously.

Speaking on Sunday at the 17th Annual Convention of the Igbo Youth Movement at the Nike Lake Hotel, Enugu, the former governor said majority of those in government are spendthrifts.

Obi said most of the state governors tend to channel money into things that are not necessary, while lacking funds for developmental projects.

The former governor added that while he was in office, he was prudent with the state’s funds and also did not maintain guest houses, charter planes, travel with more people than necessary, fly Business Class or use bullet proof vehicles.

In essence, Obi believes that if state governors can cut down these expenses, they would be able to pay salaries.
