Policemen and officers from other paramilitary agencies stormed the Makoko (Ilaje) water front area of Lagos, demolishing houses and shanties on Monday.
Makoko is a community in Lagos inhabited by over 2,500 families who will all be affected by the demolition. According to Lagos State Government the demolition is being carried out to reclaim the Makoko Waterfront.
The residents are unhappy with the government’s action claiming they were not given ample time for evacuation.
Makoko is a slum neighbourhood with much of its structures constructed on stilts above the Lagos Lagoon.
