I currently serve as Team Charis coach and write this response on their behalf. Your article, questioning the existence of Discardious is not out of place. If I were in your position, I would ask the same questions.
It is true that Team Charis emerged winners of the 2015 Technovation Challenge, the annual coding competition for girls all around the world. The girls indeed passed through various hurdles to achieve this. It is worthy to note that they found the competition themselves, got together and developed the idea for the mobile app. I served as a coach to provide the advice and encouragement they needed to succeed. As someone working very closely with them, I can assure you that the app idea has not died and confirm that work is in steady (though slow) progress to bring it to life.
They may have faced some hurdles before winning the competition, but they have faced even more challenges after the win. I will not list them because I hate excuses. I will let the girls tell their own story when they become successful.
It is sad that in Nigeria, there is little support for innovative ideas like Discardious, and coming from teenage girls, the support is almost nonexistent. Regardless, we have managed to secure partnerships with some organizations currently working with us to complete the application and launch it fully.
For example, NUGI TECHNOLOGIES is one of the key private partners we are working with, not just to advance the girls’ programming skills, but to also get the app to become fully functional by March 2017. Please read a press statement to this effect.
We expect to have a very solid and robust application completed and launched by March 2017. We have this under control and Team Charis is grateful to all our partners and sponsors for their patience and willingness to work with us to make this a reality.
Let me add that, as a social entrepreneur, many of my successful initiatives took more than a year to launch. With Technovation and similar programs around the world, there is no pressure on girls to do anything at a certain time – as long as they are working towards achieving their goals, they should be encouraged to continue making progress.
