Reality check: Sagay and other Buhari cheerleaders are doing damage

by Alexander O. Onukwue

Have you read the opinion piece put together by Mallam Garba Shehu, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, on the President who watches a 32” TV?

Mallam Shehu has been lying low following the debacle about rats preventing the president from working from his office since he resumed duty on the 21st of August, 2017. The backlash from that was really damning of the credentials and acclaim of the foremost Journalism instructor that he probably had to take some time to evaluate everything well.

However, he appears not to have got much from his soul searching. A bogus eulogy of Buhari as the most modest man in the world, simply around a picture of him watching the Super Eagles defeat Cameroon on TV has been laughed off as sycophantic. It is being compared to another picture published by another aide of the President coming down from the Presidential jet with the headline of “Class”.

Femi Adesina’s article at the time when the President was still in London drew rebukes from persons like Dr Obiageli Ezekwesili who asked that he be shown his previous writings while at the Sun Newspapers.

But the journalists and image makers are not alone in falling over themselves to please the president. As the head of an advisory body on anti-corruption, the core of Buhari’s focuses, Prof Sagay has been a staunch defender of the administration but it appears he is also doing considerable damage to his reputation. The apparently skewed representation of the salaries of Senators in his recent lecture in Lagos is a self-inflicting detraction from the integrity and verity he is expected to uphold.

The motivation for being loyal to an employer is obvious, especially if that person is the President. But to make the image of the President at the expense of one’s own reputation would seem off track and against right reason. Why should anyone invite doubts about one’s credibility and quality of career built over time, just for a stint that would not last more than 4 or 8 years?
